Mini Pumpkin Pudding Pies

It’s finally fall, and you know what that means…

Make everything pumpkin!

Here’s a quick and easy way to make mini single-serve “pumpkin pies.”  It’s just a twist on my recent post Mini-Mousse Pies.

Just replace the chocolate mousse with this Jell-o Pumpkin Spice Instant Pudding.  We made the pudding as directed on the box and poured it into the mini pie crusts before refrigerating for about an hour.  Top with a bit of whipped cream if you want (obviously, delicious), and enjoy!  This is so simple, so easy, so quick, and it’s great to have a single-serving option rather than having an entire pumpkin pie tempting me.

It tasted great, though I don’t like the pudding filling as much as real pumpkin pie filling.  If there’s a way to make the pudding a bit firmer so it’s more like pie filling, I’d recommend trying that, too.  Overall, though, this dessert was a great success!

So tiny, so adorable, so delicious!

Hair Chalk

Have you wanted to try something new and funky with your hair without the commitment?

I’m in law school, so it’s difficult for me to do much crazy with my style or appearance.  I’m a professional individual, but I’m an individual nonetheless!  Sometimes, I just want to try something fun, like putting purple streaks in my blonde hair.  But I have to go to class, I have interviews, and I’m an adult.  So how can I do both?

I saw the idea for hair chalking in a few places.  Lauren Conrad mentioned it on her blog some time ago, and I’ve also seen it on Pinterest.  I happened to be near a beauty supply store, and I stopped in to see what they had available.  I picked up Beyond the Zone Color Buzz Party Purple hair chalk, and I was anxious to see how it would turn out.

Pros:

  • It washed out pretty easily.  Some spots took two full washes, but most of it came out in the first shower.
  • It looked pretty cool!
  • You can put the streaks wherever you want.
  • It was fun to do something different for one day/night.
  • Hair chalk comes in a bunch of colors.

Cons:

  • IT GOT EVERYWHERE.  Definitely do not do this to your hair without covering up everything you don’t want covered in chalk dust.  I’m still finding it in my bathroom months later.  Absolutely cover your clothes with a towel or something similar, I recommend wearing gloves if you can, and maybe do it in the shower or something so it doesn’t land all over counters, sinks, and floors.  If you’re wearing your hair down, do NOT wear a light color shirt!
  • When I ran a brush through my hair, it blended the color and made the streaks less pronounced.
  • I expected the color to come out in the first wash (with two shampoos), but some of it didn’t.  I wouldn’t recommend this technique if you have something important to do the following day.
  • It was a little expensive (about $8) for something I don’t foresee using very often.  If it wasn’t SO messy, I would probably consider using it more frequently.  But like I said, my entire bathroom was basically covered in purple dust.

My New Show Obsession: Pretty Little Liars

(At this point, I am somewhere in the middle of season two, and I have a ways to go before I am current on episodes.  SO PLEASE NO SPOILERS!)

I admit, I was skeptical at first.  But a few people I know talk about it a lot, and the past seasons are easily available on Netflix.  So one day, when I had some free time and the fiance was going to be out, I decided to give it a try.  I thought to myself, “I’ll watch one episode and see how it goes,” but I wasn’t expecting much.

I was hooked by the middle of episode one.

I was expecting a cheesy teen drama show, but that’s not what I got.  Pretty Little Liars (I’ll abbreviate it “PLL”) is a suspenseful mystery romantic comedy drama.  It’s got everything.  And the story isn’t as superficial as I was expecting from the title.  Yes, the main characters are four high school girls.  But there’s so much more to the show than most high school girl shows.

Without any spoilers, the basic premise of the show is that there was a group of five friends, and about a year prior to the first episode, the leader of the group went missing.  The show follows the remaining four girls as they attempt to come to terms with their friend’s disappearance, navigate high school, and have meaningful relationships with each other, their families, and significant others.  Oh, and someone’s watching them and interfering along the way.  “A,” the anonymous character, sends the girls ominous messages and interferes with their lives.  Throughout the show, you’re kept guessing about who A might be.  Just when you’re sure it’s someone, you find out it’s not.

Like a good book, PLL is the television equivalent of a page-turner.  I’m glad that I’m watching it for the first time on Netflix because I really couldn’t imagine having to wait a week between episodes!  I’ve watched as many as SIX episodes in a row.  (It was a weekend and I had just finished my law review comment… I deserved a break!)

If you haven’t watched it yet, I really recommend giving PLL a chance.   It’s a lot of fun, it makes you think, it’s awesome to see what each of the stylish main characters is wearing in each episode, and it’s a great conversation starter!  I have a blast texting friends about each episode when something crazy happens!  If you decide to watch, let me know what you think in the comments (again, no spoilers please!).  I’d love to hear your opinion!

Friday Favorites: My First Birchbox

Have you heard of Birchbox?  I hadn’t until recently, when a good friend of mine signed up and posted photos of her first box.  Once I looked into it, I decided to order a subscription for myself as a reward for submitting the final draft of my Law Review comment.  (I think it’s important to reward yourself after working hard on a project!)

And… What better way than a surprise gift that I get in my mailbox EVERY MONTH?!  Birchbox sends you a box full of beauty product samples once a month for only $10/month including shipping.  Heck, for most online orders, shipping alone costs almost that.  And this way, I get introduced to products that 1) I wouldn’t find on my own and 2) I would be too scared to spend the money on a full size.  Oh, and I have something to look forward to every month!  It’s like getting a birthday present in the mail EVERY month!

If you want more information, or you want to sign up, click here.

Anyway, here’s my first box!  I can’t wait to try all of these samples! (The chocolate is already gone… oops!)

Kittehs

Hello loves!

I haven’t been posting much lately, in part because I have been busy taking care of the two new additions to my little family!

Introducing…

Chairman Chester Meow… We call him Chester for short

and…

Bella

To be honest with you, adopting these wonderful balls of love was one of the best decisions my fiance and I have ever made!  We brought them home on 10/5/12.  They bring joy to our lives every single day.  Watching them play and seeing them grow and learn is so fulfilling.  I can’t even explain how happy they make us!

I would like to sincerely thank Centre County Paws for all of the work that they do.  Without their hard work and dedication, we would never have found our new kittens, and they would have never found a loving home.  While I can understand the appeal of choosing a new pet from a breeder or pet shop, I would highly recommend adopting them from a local shelter, like we did!  There is no way that I could love these little furballs any more than I do.  There are tons of benefits that come along with adopting pets.  For example, you get a great feeling knowing that you are rescuing an animal that someone else left behind.  In addition, it is much less expensive to adopt than to buy a new pet.  Adoption fees are usually reasonable, and you know that the money is going to a great cause.  I would recommend getting to know the animal before choosing to bring it home to make sure that it fits your needs and abilities to care for it, but if you’re patient you can find the perfect pet!

Please keep in mind that, while having pets is absolutely fantastic, it is also a lot of responsibility.  Different types of animals require different levels of attention, and all pets deserve to have a family that takes good care of them.  It’s about more than just feeding them and making sure they have fresh water (which, of course, are both important aspects of pet ownership).  You also have to make sure they are healthy, keep up with vet visits and immunizations, make sure they have comfortable places to sleep, make sure that they feel safe and loved… there’s a lot that goes into pet ownership!

With all of the stress and difficulties that law school and life bring, it is so wonderful to come home every day knowing that these two are waiting for us.  Cuddling up with them at the end of a long day really just makes life a lot better!

If you have any questions about having new pets or about adopting, please let me know in the comments, and I would be happy to answer whatever I can!

Update: 12/7/12

It’s been a couple of months, and Bella and Chester continue to bring us joy every single day!  In fact, they are both currently warming my feet as I type. 🙂

At first, we were a little concerned that the two wouldn’t get along.  It took a couple of weeks for them to get used to each other (they came from different litters), but now they are BEST friends.  It is so sweet how much they cuddle and play together.  They even groom each other!  Chester follows Bella just about everywhere that she goes… unless he’s just too sleepy. hehe.  I am so glad that we decided to choose two kittens to become part of our family.  It is clear every day how much they love and need each other, especially considering that we are in class and at school for at least a few hours per day, so it’s nice to know they have each other.  Plus, they have very distinct personalities and each bring different things to our lives.  Chester is the snuggler and the gentleman, always posing and looking proper.  Bella is always prancing around like the princess that she is, but she’s also quite the little huntress and loves pouncing on her toys… especially that darned red dot!

DIY Spirit Bows

Since moving to the Eastern U.S., I have noticed that girls do a lot more to dress for foootball in a cute and spirited way than I’m used to.  I LOVE it!  I wanted to get in on it, so this fall I’ve made myself a pretty hairbow to wear to tailgates and for gameday.  I had fun making it, I think it turned out really cute, and it’s actually not that difficult once you get the hang of it.  I got compliments on it after just one game, so I think it’s a hit!

Here is the ribbon I picked for my bow. I liked the sparkly silver for a little pop of fun!

The finished product!

The perfect accent for gameday!

I would love to make my own tutorial to teah you how to make these bows, but I am just not talented enough to explain it very well! I used both of the following tutorials together to make my bow, and I think they are both very helpful.   I tried incorporating the silver glittery ribbon as a third layer on top of the navy and white, but it really just didn’t work well.  It was tough to wrangle all three ribbons and fold them all properly.  In addition, instead of making separate bows and layering them once finished, I stacked the white ribbon on top of the navy and folded them together to make one unified bow.  I personally like the look better that way, but you can also do it how the tutorials recommend and I think it will still look great.  I played around with the ribbon quite a bit before I actually cut any to get a good idea of how I wanted to do it and how much ribbon I would need.  I hope you find these helpful, and let me know if I can answer any questions about how I made mine!  I found the video on the Southern Plate page extremely helpful, but found that using both tutprials together really helped me understand the best ways to work with the ribbon, so I would recommend checking out both!

I hope you have as much fun as I did!  I am planning to make a couple of different style bows over the next months, so I will be sure to post updates as I have them!  Do you have any favorite hair bow techniques or styles?  What about favorite gameday accessories or outits?  Please share in the comments!

XOXO
