Discovering a New World

I’d kinda like to keep track of some of the new things that I discover as I become acclimated to the Eastern U.S.  I have a feeling that someday, these things will no longer seem novel or revolutionary, but I’d like to be able to remind myself of the things I had to learn.  I think it will also suffice as a pretty useful guide for any of my desert friends who come to visit! 🙂

  1. The fact that rain has stopped does not mean that rain has stopped *beneath trees*. I was unaware of this because in Vegas, there is no rain AND there are no trees. Go figure!
  2. It can, and does, rain more than once every few months.  In addition, it can rain more than 4 inches in a weekend.  Yes, I know that’s above average rainfall for a YEAR in Las Vegas.
  3. If you have a bag big enough and an umbrella small enough… carry it with you.  You never know when you might need it.
  4. Temperatures in the 60s can actually be considered acceptable in August.
  5. Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer is DE-LISH!
  6. Wegmans is like an odd mix of Wal-Mart and Whole Foods.  They also sell “jammie dodgers” in their British food aisle (they have that), which reminds me of Eddie Izzard and makes me smile.
  7. Squirrels are EVERYWHERE!
  8. Parking is a luxury, not a right.
  9. Walking is an acceptable mode of transportation here.  In fact, it’s expected.
  10. People own (and wear!) rain boots.
  11. Do not sit under trees with acorns on them.  They fall, and when they do, they hurt.
  12. If you think it might possibly rain, and you realize after walking a short distance from your apartment that you forgot your umbrella and think “well… I MIGHT have time to get it if I hurry…” DO IT.  It’s worth going back to avoid walking in the rain.
  13. Penn State football is AWESOME!!!
  14. Beware the crazy games they play at tailgates here.  There is, strangely, the possibility of nails flying through the air… Rock found out the hard way… with his head.
  15. Living in a community that supports the university and had tons of spirit is really fun!
  16. When someone says “We are…” the appropriate response is “PENN STATE!”  After the third or fourth time, they will say “Thank you!” to which you should reply “You’re WELCOME!” 😀
  17. It is SO much easier to get excited about college football when you’re on the RIGHT side of a 41-7 victory!
  18. Squirrels make a really weird sound when they hit the ground after falling out of a tree.
  19. It seems a lot of things fall out of trees here…

I hope to continue adding to this list as I discover new things! 🙂  If you’re from the Eastern U.S. and would like to give some advice or make recommendations for additions to the list, please let me know!
